National Cleaning Day: Police clarify who can travel during three-hour restriction

Police have clarified that the planned movement restrictions during Uganda’s National Cleaning Day will not affect everyone, with specific groups allowed to travel during the three-hour exercise.

The restriction will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 7:00am to 10:00am, to allow citizens across the country to participate in the national cleaning exercise.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said only essential movements will be permitted during the period, urging those exempted to carry valid identification or supporting documents.

Those allowed to travel include patients seeking medical attention, hospital staff with valid identification, journalists on duty, security personnel, people travelling abroad, tourists, cross-border travellers using designated routes, and individuals attending scheduled medical treatment with proof of appointment or relevant documents.

During the exercise, vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles will generally not be allowed on roads, while restrictions will also apply to some water transport activities.

Police advised the public to cooperate with officers enforcing the temporary restrictions and ensure they have the necessary documentation if they must move during the exercise.

The National Cleaning Day initiative is aimed at promoting cleanliness, environmental protection, and community participation across Uganda.
