Red Flags — The warning you painted white because you were in love

Someone who genuinely wants to build a future with you should be able to give you reasonable time to ask questions, seek counsel and make informed decisions.

We don’t always miss red flags. Sometimes, we see them. We explain them. We spiritualise them. We dismiss them with excuses like, “He is just stressed.”

Until the same red flag that seemed like a small inconvenience during dating becomes a divorce paper in marriage.

Let me be your little angel today: don’t marry a red flag, praying it will eventually turn green.

There are seven red flags you should never ignore in a relationship.

1. They Never Take Responsibility

It is always someone else’s fault.

If every ex was crazy, every boss was jealous and every friend betrayed them, sooner or later, you will become the next villain in their story.

A person who cannot say, *“I was wrong. I am sorry,”* may eventually make you apologise for their mistakes throughout your marriage.

2. Watch How They Act When They Are Angry

Everyone is nice when they are happy.

Watch them when they are angry, tired, stuck in traffic or told “No.”

Do they insult you? Do they break things? Do they give you the silent treatment for days to punish you?

Pay attention.

If they cannot manage their anger now, do not assume marriage will magically change them.

3. They Slowly Isolate You

“It’s just us against the world.”

It sounds romantic at first.

Then, slowly, you realise you no longer talk to your friends. You stop visiting your family. Your world becomes centred entirely around them.

That is not love. That is control.

Healthy love expands your life; it does not imprison you.

4. Their Words and Actions Don’t Match

They say, “I love you,” but they do not show up.

They promise to stop cheating, lying or drinking, but the behaviour keeps repeating.

They hurt you, become sweet afterwards, apologise and promise to change — then hurt you again.

Listen: words are cheap. Patterns are expensive.

Believe the patterns.

5. They Don’t Respect Your Boundaries

You say no to sex before marriage, and they guilt-trip you.

You tell them you do not like them checking your phone, but they do it anyway.

You say you need time to pray, and they mock your faith.

If someone cannot respect a small boundary now, do not assume they will respect your bigger boundaries in marriage.

Boundaries are not barriers to love. They are part of healthy love.

6. You Are Always Anxious, Not at Peace

With a healthy relationship, you should generally feel safe, respected and secure.

With an unhealthy one, you may find yourself constantly walking on eggshells, wondering what will upset them next, what mood they will be in or whether another argument is coming.

Pay attention to how the relationship makes you feel over time.

Constant fear and anxiety should not be dismissed as simply “the price of love.”

7. They Rush You

“We must get married quickly.”

“Don’t tell too many people.”

“If you really love me, prove it now.”

Be careful.

Someone who genuinely wants to build a future with you should be able to give you reasonable time to ask questions, seek counsel and make informed decisions.

Real love does not need to trap you. It should give you room to build together.

Singles, Stop Painting Red Flags White

Red flags in dating are not tests you are required to endure.

They are signals that deserve your attention.

You cannot build a peaceful home by deliberately ignoring patterns of behaviour that consistently create chaos, disrespect or fear.

Stop painting red flags white just because you are in love.

The pain of confronting a difficult truth during dating may be far easier to face than the consequences of ignoring it for years.

Do not ignore the warning simply because you love the person carrying it.
