Dunia Sibomana, who survived a chimpanzee attack at the age of six that left him severely disfigured, has made history by becoming the first Congolese wrestler to win gold at the African wrestling championships in 2026.
Sibomana lost his lips, parts of his face and right ear, as well as his left middle finger, in the attack at Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His brother and cousin died in the incident.
After facing rejection and bullying in his community, he received free reconstructive surgery in New York at the age of eight, undergoing more than 10 operations.
With support from a wrestling coach, Sibomana went on to become a three-time New York State champion before achieving continental glory for DR Congo in 2026.
His remarkable journey from tragedy to sporting success has become an inspiring story of resilience and determination.
