Former Buyamba County MP Amos Mandela, also known as Mandera Amos Mugerwa, has died after weeks of treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital following an alleged attack during the 2026 election campaigns.

Mandela reportedly sustained severe injuries after being assaulted by unidentified assailants in Kagamba, Rakai District, shortly after appearing on a radio talk show during the campaign period.

A member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Mandela contested the January 2026 parliamentary election as an independent candidate but lost to Gyaviira Ssemwanga

He later challenged the election results in court but withdrew his petition in September 2026, reportedly due to persistent health complications.

Mandela represented Buyamba County in the 8th and 9th Parliaments. His death has renewed concerns about political violence and the safety of candidates during election campaigns.

His family, friends, and supporters are mourning his passing as calls grow for peaceful political competition and the protection of all candidates, regardless of their political affiliation.

May his soul rest in peace.
