Maris Wanyera Joins FIA Board to Strengthen Fight Against Financial Crime

The FIA’s board provides institutional oversight and strategic direction as the authority implements its mandate.

Maris Wanyera, Acting Director of Debt and Cash Policy at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED), has been sworn in as a member of the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) Board of Directors.

Wanyera’s appointment brings public administration and financial management experience to the board responsible for guiding the authority’s efforts to combat money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crimes.

The FIA welcomed Wanyera to the board, saying her experience would be valuable in advancing the institution’s mandate.

“The Board Chairman and Executive Director welcomed her, noting that her experience in public administration and financial management will be valuable in advancing the FIA mandate,” the authority said in a statement.

The appointment comes as Uganda continues efforts to strengthen financial oversight and protect its economy from illicit financial flows and activities that threaten the integrity of the financial system.

Strengthening financial intelligence

The Financial Intelligence Authority was established to detect and deter money laundering by collecting, analysing and disseminating information on suspicious financial transactions to relevant law enforcement agencies.

The information helps authorities investigate and combat money laundering, terrorism financing and the financing of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Through its financial intelligence work, the authority supports efforts to identify suspicious transactions and provide information that can help law enforcement agencies pursue financial crimes.

The FIA’s board provides institutional oversight and strategic direction as the authority implements its mandate.

Wanyera’s experience in public finance and financial management is expected to contribute to the board’s work, particularly in areas requiring coordination between financial policy, public administration and efforts to safeguard the economy.

Her appointment adds to the leadership overseeing Uganda’s financial intelligence framework, which plays a role in protecting the country’s financial system from abuse by individuals and networks involved in illicit activities.
