Elwelu’s wife Patricia claims soldiers planted guns at their home

Patricia Apolot, the wife of retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, has accused security personnel of planting guns and ammunition at their home in Soroti District, disputing claims that the weapons were recovered during a security operation.
Apolot said armed security personnel raided their home in Awoja Parish at around 7:30 pm, questioning her about her husband’s whereabouts and confiscating her two mobile phones and those belonging to her sisters.
She explained that she had not seen her husband for more than two weeks, saying he had gone for prayers and preferred to remain isolated.
Her allegations follow an October 27 statement by Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who claimed that security operatives had recovered guns and ammunition from one of Elwelu’s homes in Teso and warned him to surrender.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs has disputed reports suggesting that President Yoweri Museveni guaranteed Elwelu personal safety before he surrendered.
In a statement, UPDF spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi said Elwelu surrendered peacefully because security forces had closed in on him. He added that the retired general would be held accountable for his actions before the UPDF General Court Martial.
The controversy comes as the PLU Parliamentary Caucus announces plans to hold a press conference at Parliament on November 9, 2026, to address the security situation in Teso Sub-region and what it describes as political interference in security matters.
