Top teams drop points in Bundesliga’s title race
Dortmund needed some time to recover but pressed for an equalizer whereas Cologne focused on counterattacks.
Cologne stunned runners-up Borussia Dortmund with a 3-2 comeback victory, while front-runners Union Berlin suffered their first defeat into the season after losing 2-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt in Bundesliga on Saturday.
The “BVB” took the reins on the road as Donyell Malen tested Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe in the 17th minute.
Schwabe was hapless at the half-hour mark as dominant Dortmund broke the deadlock through Julian Brandt, who finished off Jude Bellingham’s good build-up work into the bottom right corner.
Youngster Karim Adeyemi should have doubled the visitors’ lead, but Schwabe was on guard twice before denying Malen’s dangerous shot just ahead of halftime.
After the restart, Cologne came out with their guns blazing and deservedly restored parity against passive Dortmund as Florian Kainz hammered home Linton Maina’s assist with 53 minutes played.
The Billy Goats eventually completed their comeback two minutes later as Kainz’s corner kick found former Dortmund striker Steffen Tigges, who nodded home from close range.
Dortmund needed some time to recover but pressed for an equalizer whereas Cologne focused on counterattacks.
The hosts’ strategy paid off as Dejan Ljubicic latched onto Denis Huseinbasic’s square pass to make it 3-1 on the scoreboard in the 71st minute.
The visitors reduced the arrears as Benno Schmitz scored an own goal in the dying seconds of the match.
Elsewhere, first half goals from Mario Gotze and Jesper Lindstrom secured Eintracht Frankfurt a 2-0 win over Union Berlin on home soil.
Freiburg jumped onto the second spot as Christian Streich’s men snatched a 2-1 victory over Mainz.
Leipzig showed no mercy to last-placed Bochum and cruised to a 4-0 victory on braces from Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku.
Yannick Gerhardt’s late winner helped Wolfsburg overpower Stuttgart 3-2, and newly promoted Werder Bremen thrashed Borussia Monchengladbach 5-1.
