Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a deadly disease with occasional outbreaks that occur mostly on the African continent.

The Ministry of Education and Sports has immediately suspended visitation days in schools due to the current outbreak of Ebola in the country.

In a letter released on 28th October 2022 to district education officers and heads of institutions of learning, the Permanent Secretary of the education ministry, Ismael Mulindwa, directed that all school management should with immediate effect suspend all school visitation days and leavers parties until the end of the current school term.

He added that learners in boarding institutions should also be discouraged from making non-essential trips out of school.

“Given that some positive cases have now been confirmed among learners from families of known contacts, it is necessary to strengthen the existing infection prevention measures at the school level,” he added.

Mulindwa also highlighted that the Ministry of Health and the National Task Force advised leaving institutions of learning open; however, the management should take extra care to ensure effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures.
