Golfers celebrate Mutebile
Mutebile died on 23 January 2022 in a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He is remembered as one of the most influential economists in Uganda.
Special tributes continue to pour in celebrating the life of former Bank of Uganda governor, the Late Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile.
The latest tributes have come from the golf fraternity in Kigezi sub-region where he was an active member and patron of the Kabale Sports Club.
Mutebile died on 23 January 2022 in a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He is remembered as one of the most influential economists in Uganda.
He also enjoyed golf sport.
Golfers from abroad and different parts of the country over the weekend participated in the Professor Mutebile Memorial Golf tournament that took place at the Kabale Sports Club Makanga Golf Course.
This tournament was organized by the Tumusime Mutebile Foundation and was sponsored by Kigezi Highland Tea Limited as the main sponsor.
Kigezi Highland Tea partnered with the Bank of Uganda and the International Community of BanyaKigezi (ICOB).
“The late Professor Mutebile used to sponsor a tournament during his birthday every 27th of January,” Robert Bugabo of Kabale Sports Club said.
He further said that the Mutebile also sponsored youths to participate in different tournaments, and participated in the expansion of the Kabale Sports Club Golf Course.
And before his death, Mutebile had requested construction plans for the new clubhouse.
Bugabo added that this first anniversary of the Professor Mutebile memorial tournament has registered a very overwhelming turnup as compared to the previous tournaments they have been holding.
He remained hopeful that they will always host tournaments of a similar magnitude.
Speaking during the awarding ceremony (dinner) that took place at White Horse Inn, the Kabale Sports Club chairperson Edgar Mashemererwa and the Club’s captain Ali Karama recognized Mutebile.
They said Mutebile was someone who wished to see the Club prosper although he died before executing some of the goals he had set for the club.
At the same function, some members of Mutebile appreciated the Kabale Sports Club for recognizing the achievements Mutebile brought to the club where he served as a patron.
They further say that the Mutebile legacy will keep on living because he contributed much to the gold fraternity.
The CEO of Kigezi Highland Tea Limited, James Musinguzi Garuga, also asked the golfers and other people to consider supporting the Tumusime Mutebile Foundation.
Garuga pledged to also sponsor next year’s Professor Mutebile Memorial Tournament.
The tournament’s overall winner men were Emmanuel Kamugisha with handicap 7 and a gross of 74 and Meron Kyomugisha with handicap 9 and a gross of 75 all from Kabale Sports Club.
Mutebile served as a patron of the Kabale Sports Club for about 7 years before his death. This mantle was then taken by the Executive Director of Uganda Industrial Research Institute Professor Charles Kwesiga.
