Australia bans fully AI-generated songs from official music charts

The move follows growing concerns over the use of generative AI to create music and whether such works should compete alongside songs produced by human artists.

Australia has moved to restrict the influence of artificial intelligence in the music industry, with wholly or largely AI-generated songs now banned from its official music charts.

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) said songs released from this week must be “substantially human made” to qualify for chart rankings.

The move follows growing concerns over the use of generative AI to create music and whether such works should compete alongside songs produced by human artists.

ARIA said the new rule was intended to promote the human nature of artistry at a time when artists are competing for attention in an increasingly crowded music market.

The decision follows controversy surrounding Australian DJ Josh Fawaz’s AI-assisted cover of Madonna’s Like a Prayer, which recently topped the ARIA dance singles chart and reached number two on the overall chart. The track has reportedly been streamed more than 48 million times on Spotify. 00am

Fawaz later added generative AI credits to the song following criticism over its production.

ARIA said it was not interested in promoting the success of music generated without meaningful human artistry.

The new eligibility rules add to growing international debate over AI-generated music, including questions around copyright, ownership, artist compensation and the role of human creativity.

The Australian move could also influence how music organisations in other countries respond as AI-generated songs become increasingly sophisticated and more difficult for listeners to distinguish from traditionally produced music.

For Australian artists, the new rules mean that human creative input will remain a key requirement for achieving recognition on the country’s official music charts.
