Be accountable leaders, Stanchart Bank boss tips CEO Apprentices

On Monday, CEO Summit Uganda organized the CEO apprenticeship program 2022 where 30 future CEOs were mentored.

The health running of a business and its sustainability largely depend on the astuteness of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who not only manages its operations but also gives it a proper strategic direction.

It is, therefore, important that established and experienced CEOs mentor those that will come after them. On Monday, CEO Summit Uganda organized the CEO apprenticeship program 2022 where 30 future CEOs were mentored.

The objective of the program is to delve deeper into the chief executive role through knowledge sessions with African leaders of the industry.  The aim is to grow the next generation of transformational leaders in Uganda.

Speaking to 30 apprentices of the program about how CEOs can “Lead and Build legacies” that will outlive them, Sanjay Rughani, the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, noted that as a leader, CEOs must have principles and values.

Humility, accountability, and purpose will have a positive impact on your legacy as a leader, Rughani explained.

“Stay true to your own version of leadership and enable others to achieve the set goals and this will in turn have a positive impact on your legacy,” he explained further.

“Always have a global perspective and context. International events have a tendency of affecting us and it is important to keep updated with what’s happening on the international scene,” he added.

Sanjay called upon aspiring leaders to have a leadership scorecard that encompasses their 4 lives which he defined as being centered on Self, Work, Family and friends and Community.

He advised them to create at least 3 goals around each of them after consulting with the stakeholders on what they expect.

He reiterated the importance of feedback stating that regardless of what leaders do, people will be the judges and define their leadership as they experienced it.
