Authorities in Buliisa District have raised concern over rising cases of vandalism targeting oil road signs and government property, particularly in public health facilities.
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Silvester Tumukurate, said the district has registered multiple incidents involving destruction and theft of infrastructure in health centres, camps, and along major roads, especially on the Buliisa–Hoima route.
“We have witnessed increasing cases of vandalism in health centres and theft of road signs, some of which have been removed and taken towards Hoima,” he said.
Tumukurate revealed that several suspects have already been arrested, with most of them being residents of Buliisa District. He noted that the District Security Committee has resolved to take stricter action against offenders.
“Anyone caught vandalising government property will be apprehended and prosecuted. Those found guilty will also be required to compensate for the damage or loss caused,” he emphasised.
He further urged community members to guide young people against engaging in such acts, describing vandalism as a harmful practice that undermines development.
The Deputy RDC made the remarks while commissioning a water project at Avogera Health Centre III in Ngwendo Sub-county. The facility was constructed by TotalEnergies EP Uganda in partnership with Engineers Without Borders East Africa.
Tumukurate called on beneficiaries to ensure proper use and maintenance of the facility.
Speaking at the same event, Joy Mubale, Director of Social Performance at TotalEnergies EP Uganda, said the project will benefit both the health facility and surrounding communities.
“Water is essential for wellbeing and efficient living. This project will greatly improve access to clean water for patients and residents in Avogera,” she said.
The Buliisa Assistant District Health Officer, Thaban Gabriel, noted that improved water access is expected to reduce infection rates at the health unit.
Meanwhile, Fiona Namutebi, a midwife at the facility, highlighted the challenges staff have faced due to inadequate water supply, saying the new project will significantly improve service delivery.
