Burundi to deploy troops to eastern DR Congo to monitor withdrawal of armed groups

The deployment of troops by EAC member states is part of the implementation of directives by EAC leaders in Bujumbura, the largest city and main port of Burundi, on Feb. 4, said the statement.

Burundi will deploy its troops to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Saturday to monitor and verify the ceasefire and withdrawal by all armed groups, the East African Community (EAC) said in a statement Friday.

The deployment of the troops to the East African Regional Force is in line with the roadmap set by the EAC chiefs of defense forces on Feb. 8, the EAC said in the statement issued by its headquarters in Tanzania’s northern city of Arusha.

The statement said all other EAC troops contributing member states will shortly make deployment within the agreed timeframe.

The deployment of troops by EAC member states is part of the implementation of directives by EAC leaders in Bujumbura, the largest city and main port of Burundi, on Feb. 4, said the statement.

The EAC’s quest to find a sustainable solution to the restoration of peace and security in eastern DRC has received support from across the globe, said the statement.

The statement said the EAC remained committed to the utilization of existing regional and global frameworks to address the security crisis in eastern DRC and reiterated the EAC leaders’ call for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of all armed groups in eastern DRC, and embracing of dialogue.

The EAC member states are Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, DRC and Uganda
