Centenary Bank: Godfrey Byekwaso finally takes over after 16 years of Fabian Kasi
Reflecting on the philosophy that shaped his leadership, Kasi underscored the importance of customer confidence in the banking sector.

Centenary Bank has entered a new chapter in its corporate journey following the official leadership transition from long-serving Managing Director Fabian Kasi to Godfrey Byekwaso, signalling continuity in strategy while positioning the bank for its next phase of growth and innovation.
The transition, announced during the Centenary Bank Leadership Transition Media Breakfast in Kampala on Thursday, marks the end of Kasi’s 16-year tenure at the helm of Uganda’s largest commercial microfinance bank.
Over the past decade and a half, Kasi oversaw a period of significant transformation, during which the bank expanded its national footprint, deepened financial inclusion, accelerated digital banking adoption and strengthened its position as Uganda’s leading commercial microfinance institution.
Reflecting on the philosophy that shaped his leadership, Kasi underscored the importance of customer confidence in the banking sector.
“The only commodity we sell to the public as a bank is trust. If that trust is eroded, even for a single day, then we lose the plot,” he said.
His remarks highlighted the principle that has defined Centenary Bank’s customer-centric approach throughout his tenure, with trust remaining at the core of the institution’s brand and business model.
Speaking at the same event, incoming Managing Director Godfrey Byekwaso pledged to build on the bank’s strong foundation while steering it towards sustained growth in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven financial sector.
Byekwaso said his priority will be to continue delivering exceptional value to customers, empower communities through inclusive financial services and advance the bank’s mission of expanding access to finance across Uganda.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the confidence that customers and stakeholders have placed in the institution over the years, while embracing innovation, collaboration and sustainable business growth.
The leadership transition comes at a time when Uganda’s banking sector is undergoing rapid digital transformation, increasing financial inclusion and evolving customer expectations.
Industry observers say the continuity in leadership and strategic direction positions Centenary Bank to strengthen its market leadership while responding to emerging opportunities in digital finance, SME banking and rural financial services.
With a legacy built on trust, resilience and community banking, the institution now embarks on a new chapter under Byekwaso’s leadership, seeking to consolidate past gains while driving the next wave of growth and innovation in Uganda’s financial sector.
If this is for a business magazine, I can also make it more analytical by including the bank’s market position, asset base, customer numbers, and the strategic implications of the leadership transition.
