News of Gen Elly Tumwine passing away spread like wildfire Saturday night. However, a tweet from Gen Tumwine’s known Twitter handle was quick to reassure Ugandans that the decorated soldier was alive and that what was circulating on social media was fake news.
On behalf of the family of Gen. Tumwine, we hereby dispel rumours circulating on social media in regards to his health and well-being. Thank you for the love and prayers. pic.twitter.com/XTXKa2hdYq

“On behalf of the family of Gen. Tumwine, we hereby dispel rumours circulating on social media in regards to his health and well-being. Thank you for the love and prayers,” the unsigned tweet said.
It is however clear that Gen Tumwine didn’t send out the tweet – probably a family member did. Other sources said Gen Tumwine was not dead but unwell.

Gen Tumwine is a career soldier having joined the military in the late 1970s and was part of the Museveni-led group that attacked the Kabamba barracks to kick off a five year guerrilla war that ousted the Milton Obote and Bazilio Tito Okello government in 1986.
