Jinja-Iganga Highway Accident Claims Three Travellers

Eyewitness Moses Musisi and Hamis Musonge blamed the accident on a narrow highway, lack of speed control mechanisms in the area and signposts to alert new road users on the dangers of speeding in the black spot.

At least three people have been confirmed dead at Kakira junction along Jinja – Iganga highway in the Tuesday evening accident.

The collision was between a motorcycle registration number UET 176F and a trailer registration number KBH 501C, ZC 1930 that was heading to Kampala.

The deceased identities were not readily available by the time of publishing this news article.

Bashir Mugoya, a motorcyclist currently nursing wounds at Jinja Regional Referral hospital said he was ferrying three youths from Nankoma sub-county in Bugiri district to Mukono municipality where they had been promised casual jobs.

“I was riding alongside the trailer from Iganga, however, I noticed another approaching from the opposite direction and lost control of the motorcycle, slid into the tires of the speeding trailer which crashed the trio,” Mugoya narrated.

They further asked Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to formulate means of expanding the Kakira junction to ease traffic flow.

Kiira Region police spokesperson, James Mubi, revealed that the truck driver whose name has been withheld is in custody at Kakira central police station awaiting prosecution.

He urged road users to continuously observe traffic rules and guidelines to reduce road accidents.
