KCCA to carry out house to house cleanliness inspection ahead of Group of 77 (G77) + China Summit

The inspections, according to Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, are aimed at ensuring that the residents maintain cleanliness, proper sanitation and proper waste disposal in the city.

In a way of actively working towards a modern Smart City to guarantee an attractive, livable and sustainable City for the wellbeing of all Ugandans, the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs will carry out a house to house inspection of Kampala City.

The inspections, according to Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, are aimed at ensuring that the residents maintain cleanliness, proper sanitation and proper waste disposal in the city.

The cleanup comes ahead of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits in January next year due to take place between January 15th and 20th and 21st and 23rd respectively, at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.

Kabanda highlighted that Ugandans should improve their residences and trading spaces by cleaning and painting the outer areas, install security lighting on their premises so that there is a clean entrance to the residences and trading space.

“KCCA issued a notice on November 9, 2023 via radio and newspapers informing the public that KCCA would carry out inspections to ensure that the residents maintain cleanliness in the city. The KCCA Physical Planning, Public Health and Enforcement teams are monitoring compliance in the city suburbs,” she added.

The minister further explained that during the inspections, the Division Town Clerks are going to carry out a house to house inspection with effect from 1st December 2023 to ensure compliance by residents to the renovation of unsightly buildings, painting and adherence to building regulations.

Residents have also been asked to adhere to the removal of illegal and unsightly structures, kiosks, temporary structures, advertising tools, business signs, shop extensions, and focus on installation of lighting on the building frontages and trading spaces.

“citizens should focus on maintenance of clean and green yards and paving of frontages. Clean and desilted and unblocked drainages, Replacement of unsightly hoardings for construction sites and Slashing and clearing of undeveloped plots,” she said.

Kabanda stressed that as the Authority they are doing beautification and landscaping works across the City, with works at the Kubiri round about in Kawempe Division, along Ggaba Road in Makindye Division and other parts of the City.

She applauded some property owners, especially along Ggaba Road who have heeded to the call of KCCA and are already improving their buildings and frontages. Vendors operating on streets are encouraged to find space in any of the 16 markets KCCA operates.

Failure to do so, the minister stated that KCCA shall have no option but to enforce compliance in line with the provisions of the Physical Planning Act, 2010 as amended, the Building Control Act, 2013 and the National Environment Noise Standards and Control Regulations, 2003.
