Makerere to graduate 8,432 as numbers drop for 76th ceremony

The four-day ceremony will confer 185 PhDs, 2,034 Master’s degrees, and 6,043 Bachelor’s degrees. Prof. Nawangwe noted that PhD numbers would be higher with increased government sponsorship.

Makerere University has announced a reduction in the number of graduands for its 76th graduation ceremony scheduled for February 24–27, 2026.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said the drop—from 13,642 last year to 8,432 this year—is due to COVID-19 disruptions, which affected the transition of one cohort of Senior Six candidates to university.

The four-day ceremony will confer 185 PhDs, 2,034 Master’s degrees, and 6,043 Bachelor’s degrees. Prof. Nawangwe noted that PhD numbers would be higher with increased government sponsorship.

Assoc. Prof. Jackline Bonabana, Chair of the Ceremonies Committee, said preparations are in full gear, with graduation gowns to be issued from February 2 at the Dining Hall, University Hall.

Academic Registrar Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi confirmed all transcripts are ready, and an information tent will be set up outside the Senate Building from February 2 to assist graduands.
