The process to elect persons to represent Uganda at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has kicked off. Candidates intending to stand for EALA elections are picking nominations forms from the Office of the Clerk.

The deadline for picking forms is Tuesday, 20th September, 5:00 pm. Likewise, nominations are open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm in Parliament conference hall.

“Candidates shall be nominated either under a political party or as an independent candidate. For a person nominated under a political party, the party must be represented in Parliament. In this case, the party’s Secretary General or a person authorized shall endorse the candidate,” Parliament said in a communication.

Every candidate shall pay a cash nomination fee of Shs3m and be given a receipt as evidence of payment at the nomination venue. All nomination forms shall include the names, signatures and constituency of not less than five Members of Parliament supporting the nomination of the candidate.

By 3 pm, Kateregga Mohamed of Justice Forum (JEEMA) and independents Stella Kiryowa, Fiona Rwandarugali, and Patience N. Tumwesigye had been nominated to contest for the position of MP EALA.

The EALA is the legislative organ of the East African Community and consists of members elected from outside the national Parliaments of the partner states.

The Parliament of Uganda elects Uganda’s representatives to the EALA. Uganda is represented by nine Members of Parliament elected from the political parties represented in the parliament and one independent.
