Police registers reduction in road accidents during Christmas festivities

Traffic Police directorate has registered a reduction in road accidents from 213 in 2021 to 206 in 2022 during the Christmas festive season - between 23rd and 26th of this month, December.

The reduction, according to Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic police spokesperson, has been attributed to an improvement by motorists in following road signs and being mindful about other road users.

Nampiima, however, noted that during the period of 23rd to 26th December this year, Kampala Metropolitan registered the highest number of accidents with 102 crashes across the regions of the central business district.

She said, Kampala South had 40 crashes, Kampala East with 30 and Kampala North with 31 crashes, majorly caused due to reckless driving.

“For kampala South they registered 3 fatal accidents, 16 being serious and 21 being minor, totalling up to 40 accidents. Kampala East region registered 8 fatal accidents, 12 serious, and 11 minor, making it up to 31 accidents. In Kampala North, we have 4 fatal accidents, 13 were serious and 14 being minor,” she noted.

Nampiima added that other parts of the country which included Aswa region, North Kyoga, Elgon region, Busoga East and Savannah region among other up country regions, all registered 104 accidents.

She highlighted that pedestrians accounted for the highest number of persons killed, contributing 38.18%, followed by motorcyclists who made up 27.27%.

By the end of their traffic operations, Nampiima noted that 3519 road offenders were arrested and issued with EPS tickets.
