Two-month-long traffic diversions announced as maintenance works resume on Kampala Northern Bypass

The maintenance will be undertaken by M/S Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of the Ministry and will involve the removal of the existing asphalt surface, base preparation, priming, and the laying of a new asphalt overlay.

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has announced the resumption of periodic maintenance works along Phase One of the Kampala Northern Bypass, with construction scheduled to begin on 13 February 2026 and expected to last at least two months.

According to a public notice issued by Bageya Waiswa, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Works and Transport on 9 February 2026, the works will result in temporary traffic diversions between the Bwaise and Namungoona interchanges, as sections of the road are closed to allow for rehabilitation works.

The maintenance will be undertaken by M/S Stirling Civil Engineering Ltd on behalf of the Ministry and will involve the removal of the existing asphalt surface, base preparation, priming, and the laying of a new asphalt overlay.

To ensure safety and efficient execution of the works, the affected carriageway will be fully closed, with traffic diverted to the opposite side of the bypass. The Ministry advised motorists to exercise patience, observe all traffic signage, and comply with instructions from traffic officers deployed along the route.

“While traffic will be diverted to the opposite carriageway, road users are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and, where possible, use alternative routes off the Northern Bypass to minimise inconvenience,” the Ministry said.

The Kampala Northern Bypass is a key transport corridor linking major routes around the capital, and disruptions are expected to affect commuter traffic, commercial transporters, and long-distance motorists during the maintenance period.

The Ministry expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and appealed for cooperation from the public, noting that the works are aimed at improving road safety, durability, and overall driving conditions.
