UBOS gives district representatives one-week ultimatum to complete village mapping

Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has given district representatives an ultimatum of one week, to complete mapping of villages in their areas. Currently the bureau says mapping of the entire country now stands at 97.6%, with a few districts remaining to complete mapping their villages.

The executive director UBOS Dr.Chris Mukiza while launching the 9 day training of UBOS Supervisors (DTO’s), DCO’s, ADCO’s, and the DITO’s, implored the trainees to use this opportunity to learn and understand the different concepts and definitions, which will enable them do their work.

He added that, “we are remaining with 2.4% of the entire country. We have given all the district representatives an ultimatum of one week where they have not completed, so that they can cover all the enumeration areas and the budgets for the districts. The district planners who are the district census officers have promised that they are going to get back to their homes and complete the listing,”

Mukiza further noted that the training is aimed at equipping the UBOS Supervisors with skills that will in turn be used to train the lower-level District/City staff, that will participate in the census enumeration.

Regarding other preparations for the census the ED UBOS highlighted that 20,000 remaining tablets to be used in the exercise are to be delivered next week, ahead of the census exercise due in May.

He noted that a big number of the gadgets have reached in Uganda as they await the last butch, saying that, “we have started putting the software and applications on the systems of the tablets. So, we have 33 days to go, and we think by the census night, we shall be fully prepared to conduct a very successful census.”

Dr. Chris Mukiza also asked the representatives of the district commission to ensure supervision of the training activities within their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Explaining what categories of people have been sent to different districts in the country, the ED specified that each district has received 3 people, one being a district census officer and their assistant, along with a person responsible for I.T. The I.T specialists are to help with troubleshooting of the tablets in case of any technical issue.

The nine-days training of District Census Officers, Assistant District Census Officers, District IT officers and District Technical officers commenced yesterday (4th April 2024) at Speke Resort Hotel, Munyonyo.

The Census 2024 is a 4-Tier training the officials are being trained by selected UBOS staff and representatives from MDAs who underwent a comprehensive five-days Training of Trainers (ToT) exercise, conducted at Statistics House.

The trainees from Munyonyo will thereafter conduct a nine-days training of Sub-county supervisors at the District (Tier 3) followed by the final nine-days training of enumerators and Parish supervisors (Tier 4).

The population census is scheduled to kick off on May 10 and will run for 10 days. UBOS expects to release the preliminary census results within one month after the exercise.
