UCC advises consumers to follow protocol before lodging complaints on data theft

These according to him are from users from two Uganda’s giant telecom companies Airtel Ug and MTN.

The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission(UCC) Nyombi Thembo has acknowledged the multiple complaints regarding data usage, specifically issues where data seems to vanish or deplete faster than anticipated.

These according to him are from users from two Uganda’s giant telecom companies Airtel Ug and MTN.

Posting via his X page, Nyombi said consumer protection is one of UCC’s regulatory mandates, and these issues require resolution.

However, because of the sensitivities involved, he noted that a formal process must be followed to address these disparities conclusively.

Nyombi further explained that if one encounters discrepancies with their data usage, the first step is to contact their telecom provider directly and file a formal complaint.

“This is crucial because telecom networks are equipped with the ability to conduct detailed investigations into data usage. As part of your complaint, you can request a comprehensive data usage audit for the period,” he added.

According to Nyombi, this request of the audit provides a clear record of one’s data consumption, helping to identify any inconsistencies or errors.

The UCC boss also stressed that as a consumer, it is essential for one to know that they must initiate the data usage audit regarding their mobile number.

By doing so, Nyombi stated that it gives permission for one’s data usage to be examined while safeguarding their data privacy.

“This step ensures that your data usage is scrutinized only with your consent and does not infringe upon your right to privacy in how you choose to use your data. Should you find the outcome unsatisfactory, reach out to us,” he said.

Nyombi ’s advise comes at a time when Ugandans on X formerly twitter have embarked on a new social media campaign #DataTheftExhibition.

On several occasions many Ugandans have complained about their internet bundles getting done faster than they expected. First was Bebe Cool, real name Moses Ssali, who complained to telecom company Airtel Uganda over what he deemed an unrealistic depletion of his monthly data bundles (22GB), worth sh50,000.

Airtel Uganda attributed the cause of Bebe Cool’s data challenge to internet usage basing on the volumes of the megabyte file browsed.

Later Swangz Avenue singer Priscilla Zawedde a.k.a Azawi complained about the same.
Azawi wrote revealing how 22GBs of data that she had purchased had elapsed within two days without her streaming anything.
“Wow!! 22GBs just collapsed in two days, I didn’t even stream anything, and the only app I frequent is Twitter. Walaih Airtel empisizaamu egaali makekete,” she wrote.

The exhibition is aimed at exposing alleged issues where internet data seems to vanish or deplete faster than anticipated, from two telecom companies; Airtel Ug and MTN Ug.
