Uganda courts Chinese investment to boost tea value addition and exports
Officials said the initiative aligns with Uganda's broader industrialisation agenda by promoting value addition, strengthening agro-processing, and creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and employment.

Uganda’s Consul General to Guangzhou, Amb. Juju Nsababera, hosted officials from Hunan Tea Group to explore opportunities for transforming Uganda’s tea industry through value addition, product innovation, and expanded access to international markets.
The Consul General said the engagement seeks to strengthen collaboration between Uganda’s tea research institutions and China’s industrial expertise, with the aim of increasing the value of Uganda’s tea exports and attracting new investment into the sector.
According to the Consulate, the discussions build on the research foundation established by the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) through the China–Uganda Joint Laboratory and complement the tea sector policy framework spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF).
Hunan Tea Group, one of China’s leading tea enterprises, is expected to contribute expertise in applied research and development, product development, processing, branding, and international marketing, helping bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial production.
The partnership aims to shift Uganda’s tea industry away from reliance on bulk exports towards the production of higher-value tea products capable of competing in premium global markets.
Officials said the initiative aligns with Uganda’s broader industrialisation agenda by promoting value addition, strengthening agro-processing, and creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and employment.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the prospects for deeper cooperation, noting that the partnership could unlock significant opportunities for Uganda’s tea sector while enhancing bilateral economic ties between Uganda and China.
