The Uganda senior national football team, the Uganda Cranes, Saturday learnt of the teams they will face at the forthcoming African Nations Championship Algeria 2022 which will be held in Algeria starting Friday, January 13, 2023, and ending on Saturday, February 4, 2023.
The draws for the biennial tournament which was held in Algeria revealed that Uganda will be in Group B alongside Dr Congo, Cote D’Ivoire and Senegal. Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic said this was a fair draw for Uganda.
Before the groups were made, we prayed not to be put in groups with three teams, avoiding hosts Algeria and then Morocco,” he started before adding, ” this doesn’t mean that team that Senegal, Dr Congo and Ivory Coast are any weak. We have to get the best of preparations before the tournament starts.”
“It is important that the League back home has started and we shall have time shortly before Christmas when the first round is finished. That will give us ample time to start preparations early enough.”
This is the sixth successive time that Uganda Cranes will be playing at the final tournament having featured in 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 editions.
Meanwhile, Uganda U17 national football team, the Uganda Cubs, will face new opponents after fresh draws for the Africa Cup of Nations Zonal Qualifiers were held on Sunday.
After the withdrawal of Rwanda and Eritrea, the organising committee was faced with yet another challenge of screening of players. And when the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans were made, Sudan and Djibouti failed to pass the test.
In the new draws conducted on Saturday, Uganda is in group B alongside Burundi and South Sudan. The other group (A) has hosts Ethiopia, Somalia and Tanzania.
Hamza Lutalo’s charges will begin their quest to qualify for the final tournament on Monday against Burundi. It should be noted that the finalists at the Zonal Qualifiers get the tickets to the final tournament.
