There is a raging battle of politics pitying the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Soroti City. The two political parties are seeking to win a by-election to fill the position of Member of Parliament for Soroti City East constituency.
In this race, FDC is represented by Moses Okia Attan while NRM is represented by Herbert Edmund Ariko – the other candidate in the race, Pascal Amuriat, belongs to Uganda People’s Congress (UPC).
But while FDC and NRM are fierce rivals, in between, the ruling party manages to snatch some of the bright brains from FDC – these go on to work for the NRM government. A good example is the current two speakers of parliament – Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa who came through the ranks of FDC.
And while FDC and NRM draw daggers at each other in Soroti, it is worth noting that the NRM flag bearer in Soroti – Herbert Ariko – is a former member of FDC who only crossed to NRM in 2016. Ariko has since crossing turned his guns against FDC, the people who made him.
Speaking at St. Kizito Technical Institute playground in Madera Ward, Soroti East constituency while campaigning for Ariko, President Museveni noted that politics is about what party can help solve people’s problems.
He said: “When someone adds strength to your camp, always welcome it. The NRM has been built on reconciliation. The purpose of politics is not to choose leaders but to get people to ask themselves which party can help us solve our problems. This is the issue.”
And at that point, President Museveni stated that the party in a better position to solve people’s problems is NRM.
