8 suspects arrested for importing stolen motorcycles

The eight suspects are detained at Katwe police station along with their exhibits.

Police in Katwe has carried out an intelligence-led operation within their areas of operation and netted eight suspects that deal in suspected stolen motorcycles from neighbouring countries.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said they have been carrying out operations to crack down on business people who deal in suspected stolen motorcycles.

He noted that the dealers have abandoned dealing in stolen motorcycles from Uganda and shifted to buying stolen motorcycles from Kenya and South Sudan.

“The suspected stolen motorcycles from neighbouring countries are brought in Uganda using box body trucks with other merchandise.

They are offloaded, the new ones, and their registration numbers are changed into Ugandan number plates. The old ones are cut into spare parts,” he noted.

According to Onyango in today’s operation, Police recovered five (05) motorcycles from Kenya, four (04) motorcycle engines with Kenyan numbers, 19 Kenyan motorcycle log books, eight (08) South Sudan log books, six (06) motorcycle number plates from Kenya and four (04) from Uganda.
