Gov’t launches program to empower persons with disabilities across Uganda

In a bold move to uplift and integrate Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) into the economic mainstream, the Ugandan government has unveiled a comprehensive program aimed at addressing the pressing challenges faced by this marginalized group.

This landmark initiative, rolled out during a high-profile press conference in Kampala, promises to be a game-changer in the journey towards an inclusive society.

The minister of state for disability affairs Hellen Grace Asamo, highlighted that the program, which will span the next five years, is set to tackle key issues.

Among these includes the accessibility, education, and economic empowerment areas where PWDs have historically been left behind.

She emphasized government’s commitment to not only ensuring that PWDs have equal opportunities, but also to fostering an environment where they can thrive independently.

“This is more than just a policy shift; it’s a moral obligation to ensure that every Ugandan, regardless of their physical or mental capabilities, has the chance to contribute to and benefit from the nation’s growth,” said minister Asamo.

Key highlights of the program include substantial investments in accessible infrastructure, tailored education programs, and specialized vocational training.

These according to Asamo align with the current job market demands.

“Moreover, the government has pledged to collaborate closely with local communities, NGOs, and international partners to ensure the success and sustainability of the initiative.” She said.

The announcement has been met with widespread acclaim from disability rights advocates,  who see it as a significant step towards addressing the systemic inequalities that PWDs face.

However, they have also called for transparency and active monitoring to ensure that the promises translate into real-world impact.

With this initiative, Uganda is poised to set a precedent in the region, potentially becoming a leading example of how to empower and include PWDs in national development.
