The charge sheet states that the stolen items were allegedly taken from Kagule Plaza in Kampala’s Kiyembe area and Bweya Kajansi between 2018 and 2022.
The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded four individuals on charges of stealing curtain materials valued at a staggering Shs3.7 billion.
Mugumya Yusuf, Junior Kiruuta, Ivan Zziwa, and John Tamale appeared before Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, where the charges were read. The court has scheduled their bail hearing for November 5.
All four defendants denied allegations of theft related to curtains and associated items, which reportedly included curtain materials, cushions, curtain tapes, pipes, holders, and curtain rings. The charge sheet states that the stolen items were allegedly taken from Kagule Plaza in Kampala’s Kiyembe area and Bweya Kajansi between 2018 and 2022.
Kiruuta, Tamale, and Zziwa face additional accusations of knowingly receiving 18 rolls of curtains and related items, with full knowledge that they were stolen.
According to court documents, Mugumya is a shop attendant from Bulwadda Cell in Wakiso District, Kiruuta a businessman from Mutundwe Kirinyangabo, Bunamwaya Division, Makindye Ssabagabo, Zziwa a businessman based in Namugongo Mbalwa, Wakiso District, and Tamale a resident of Kiwanda Jomayi, Seeta in Mukono District.
The prosecution claims the stolen items belong to Hajji Sulaiman Lwabuuka Kisuule, who kept a large stock of curtains and materials at his residence in Seguku. After noticing some items were missing, he conducted an audit, revealing a significant loss, and subsequently reported the matter to the police.
