Traffic police urge caution as rainy season brings road hazards

Drivers were also encouraged to slow down, maintain safe distances, and avoid driving through flooded areas, which can conceal hidden dangers.

As the rainy season begins, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has called on motorists to exercise increased caution due to hazardous driving conditions.

SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, highlighted the dangers posed by slippery roads, reduced visibility, and higher accident risks during this period.

“We urge all motorists to be cautious while driving in the rainy season. Roads are slippery, visibility is reduced, and accidents are more likely,” Kananura said.

He advised vehicle owners to prioritize maintenance by checking tires, brakes, and lights to ensure roadworthiness, emphasizing that many accidents are caused by poorly maintained vehicles.

Drivers were also encouraged to slow down, maintain safe distances, and avoid driving through flooded areas, which can conceal hidden dangers.

“Flooded areas are deceptive, making it difficult to gauge water depth. Avoid driving through them to prevent accidents,” Kananura added.

To enhance safety, Kananura urged motorists to use headlights for better visibility, ensure windshield wipers are functional, and refrain from overtaking in poor visibility conditions.

“Overtaking in bad weather is a leading cause of accidents. If visibility is extremely poor, pull over to a safe spot until conditions improve,” he advised.

Kananura concluded by urging all road users to prioritize safety and drive responsibly during the rainy season.

“Safety is a shared responsibility. Let’s work together to minimize accidents and ensure our roads remain safe for everyone,” he said.
