Territorial Police in Kaliro District have arrested two women accused of kidnapping a four-year-old girl, a pupil at Bright Future Namukoge School.
The suspects, Namukobe Mariam (27) of Namukoge village, Kaliro District, and Babita Irene of Kiringa, Iganga District, were apprehended following a police operation in the Busoga North region.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident began on November 29, 2024, when a boda-boda cyclist, identified as Gasita and reportedly the victim’s uncle, offered to take the child to school for the end-of-term break-off.
The child never returned home, prompting her grandmother, Nakayima Edinansi, to report her missing at Kaliro Central Police Station.
Shortly after the disappearance, the family received ransom demands of UGX 3 million, confirming the child had been kidnapped. Police intelligence identified Namukobe as a key suspect.
Namukobe reportedly confessed to receiving the child from Gasita and hiding her in a sugarcane plantation before relocating her on December 1, 2024, to Kiringa, where her friend Babita was keeping the girl. Police rescued the victim from Babita’s custody, and both suspects were taken to Kaliro Central Police Station for further investigations.
Meanwhile, a manhunt for Gasita is underway, with police intensifying efforts to bring him to justice. Authorities have assured the public that the child’s safety and well-being are their top priorities as the investigation progresses.
The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting children from harm.
