PROFILE: What you need to know about David Wandera, Absa Bank’s interim MD
His appointment follows the departure of Mumba Kalifungwa, who has joined Stanbic Bank Uganda as its new Chief Executive Officer.
David Wandera has been appointed as the Interim Managing Director of Absa Bank Uganda, the bank announced on Monday.
Mr. Wandera brings over 20 years of experience in the banking sector, with a strong track record in leadership, strategic initiatives, and financial management.
He previously held the positions of Executive Director and Head of Markets at the bank, where he delivered exceptional results and built strong relationships with key stakeholders.
His appointment follows the departure of Mumba Kalifungwa, who has joined Stanbic Bank Uganda as its new Chief Executive Officer.
According to the Acting Board Chairperson of Absa Bank Uganda, George Wesonga Opiyo, the process of appointing a substantive Managing Director is already underway to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.
Absa Bank Uganda is currently ranked as the third-largest bank in the country by assets and profitability.
As of December 2023, the bank reported a loan book worth UGX 1.78 trillion, customer deposits totaling UGX 2.9 trillion, and a profit after tax of UGX 146 billion.
In addition to his extensive professional experience, Mr. Wandera is a Chartered Accountant (FCCA-UK) and holds a Master’s degree in International Finance from the University of Leeds.
His qualifications and expertise make him well-equipped to lead Absa Bank Uganda into its next chapter.
