Besigye charged with treason

According to a charge sheet sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Besigye, 67, Lutale, 65, and Oola, 48, are accused of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government by force between 2023 and November 2024.

Retired Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Hajji Obeid Lutale, and Captain Dennis Oola have been charged with treason following a Supreme Court directive requiring civilian cases before the General Court Martial to be transferred to civilian courts.

Their case has now been moved to Nakawa Magistrates Court.

On Friday morning, the trio appeared before Nakawa Magistrates Court under heavy security, awaiting the magistrate to formally read the charges against them.

According to a charge sheet sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Besigye, 67, Lutale, 65, and Oola, 48, are accused of plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government by force between 2023 and November 2024. The prosecution alleges they engaged in meetings across Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala to advance this plot.

It is further alleged that they facilitated Ugandans to travel to Kisumu, Kenya, for military and intelligence training. The alternative charge states that they knowingly failed to report plans of treason to authorities.

The accused now await further court proceedings.
