This repatriation follows ongoing efforts to bring former LRA members back to Uganda. In July 2023, 14 ex-LRA fighters, along with their families, surrendered to CAR authorities and were later returned to Uganda. The group, led by Major General Ali Acaye, also known as “Doctor,” included 14 wives and 33 children.

The family of fugitive Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader Joseph Kony has been repatriated to Uganda from the Central African Republic (CAR).

Arriving at Entebbe International Airport on February 26, 2025, the group includes Kony’s wife, Ruth Achan, and their children—Maisa Amu, Betty Akidi, and Pope Kony. They were received by Uganda’s State Minister for Northern Uganda, Kenneth Omona, and are set to be resettled in Gulu.

While his family returns home, Kony remains at large, with a bounty of Shs 17 billion (about $4.5 million) on his head.

Kony, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, led the LRA in committing widespread atrocities, including abductions, mutilations, and killings across northern Uganda and neighboring countries. Though the group was pushed out of Uganda in 2006, it continued its operations in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and CAR.

The Ugandan government remains committed to facilitating the return and reintegration of former LRA members and their families as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the affected regions.
