NRM shifts parliamentary flag-bearer primaries voting date to enable Electoral Commission conduct SIG elections

The adjustment comes to avoid a direct clash with the Electoral Commission's (EC) revised roadmap for Special Interest Group (SIG) committees.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has announced a crucial change in the polling date for its parliamentary flag-bearers, moving it from July 16 to July 17, 2025. The adjustment comes to avoid a direct clash with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) revised roadmap for Special Interest Group (SIG) committees.

According to a circular issued today by Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, the decision was made after the Electoral Commission designated July 16, 2025, as the polling date for the Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Committee at the sub-county level. This created a direct conflict with the NRM’s initially scheduled date for its internal parliamentary primaries.

“Following the national Electoral Commission’s adjustment in their electoral Roadmap for SIG Committees (and appointing 16th July 2025 as the polling date for the PWD Committee at Sub-county level), the NRM Electoral Commission, in consultation with the National Chairman, has accordingly adjusted the polling date for election of Party Flag bearers for Members of Parliament from 16th July to 17th July, 2025,” the memo stated.

The circular, addressed to the Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus at the Parliament of Uganda, emphasizes the need for all stakeholders to take note of this adjustment. The memo was officially received by the Parliament of Uganda on the same day it was issued.

This shift ensures that NRM members and electoral officials involved in the party’s internal processes are not simultaneously engaged with the national electoral body’s activities. The elections for NRM flag-bearers are crucial as they determine the individuals who will stand on the party’s ticket in the upcoming general elections for Member of Parliament seats.

NRM aspirants vying for parliamentary representation will now prepare for the revised polling date, with the party aiming for a smooth nomination and election process for its official candidates.
