Bobi Wine announces death of imprisoned Waiswa Mufumbiro’s wife, reveals cause of death

In a statement, the NUP leader expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family, particularly Waiswa, who he said is enduring the tragedy while behind bars.

The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has announced the death of Edith Katende Mufumbiro, the wife of the party’s Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, in a development that has sparked grief and renewed criticism over the continued detention of opposition supporters.

According to Bobi Wine, Edith passed away shortly after 3:00am following what he described as a “hard-fought battle with cancer.” At the time of her death, her husband, Waiswa, remained in detention at Luzira Upper Prison.

In a statement, the NUP leader expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family, particularly Waiswa, who he said is enduring the tragedy while behind bars.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dear sister and comrade,” Bobi Wine said, adding that the party stands in solidarity with the family during this difficult time.

However, the opposition leader also used the moment to sharply criticise the government and the judiciary, accusing them of perpetuating injustice against Waiswa and other detained party members.

Waiswa is among several NUP supporters facing charges of “unlawful drilling,” which allegedly occurred on February 12, 2025, at the party’s headquarters.

Bobi Wine maintains that the charges are baseless, arguing that Waiswa was not present at the location on the said date, but instead at the Mulago Cancer Institute attending to his ailing wife.

“The judiciary, fully aware of these facts, has chosen to conspire in this persecution,” Bobi Wine stated.

He further revealed that Waiswa has applied for bail multiple times, including appeals to be temporarily released to care for his sick wife, but all attempts have been unsuccessful.

The development has drawn concern among NUP supporters, who view the incident as emblematic of what they describe as continued political persecution of opposition figures in Uganda.

Despite the tragedy, Bobi Wine called on party members to remain hopeful and resilient.

“As difficult as it is, we remain hopeful that we shall overcome someday,” he said, praying for strength for Waiswa and the bereaved family.

By press time, there had been no immediate response from government or judicial authorities regarding the allegations raised by the NUP leadership.
