Uganda Airlines seals landmark Boeing deal to expand fleet and strengthen global connectivity
The agreement, signed on Wednesday at State House, marks one of the most ambitious fleet expansion plans undertaken by the national carrier since its revival in 2019.
Uganda Airlines has taken a major step in its growth journey after signing a commitment agreement with Boeing to acquire eight new passenger aircraft and two cargo freighters, a move expected to significantly expand the national carrier’s operational capacity and position Uganda as a regional aviation hub.
The agreement, signed on Wednesday at State House, marks one of the most ambitious fleet expansion plans undertaken by the national carrier since its revival in 2019.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, senior government officials, representatives of the United States Embassy, members of the Uganda Airlines Board of Directors, and executives from Boeing, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership for Uganda’s economic and aviation development.
Under the agreement, Uganda Airlines plans to acquire eight passenger aircraft and two cargo-converted freighters comprising a Boeing 767 wide-body converted freighter and a Boeing 737 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF).
The acquisition is expected to substantially increase the airline’s ability to serve regional, continental and intercontinental routes while strengthening its cargo operations at a time when Uganda is seeking to deepen its participation in global trade and tourism.
Strategic Investment in Economic Growth
Government officials and aviation industry stakeholders described the agreement as a strategic investment that aligns with Uganda’s long-term development objectives under Vision 2040.
The expanded fleet is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, investment and cargo transportation, sectors viewed as critical drivers of economic transformation and job creation.
Industry analysts note that air connectivity remains a key enabler of economic competitiveness, particularly for landlocked countries seeking access to international markets.
The addition of dedicated cargo aircraft is expected to provide a significant boost to Uganda’s export sector by improving the transportation of agricultural produce, fish products, flowers, minerals and other high-value goods to international destinations.
The development is also expected to support growth in the government’s priority sectors of Agriculture, Tourism, Minerals and Services (ATMS) by improving access to global markets and increasing connectivity for both business and leisure travellers.
By strengthening its route network and cargo capabilities, Uganda Airlines is positioning itself to play a more central role in regional commerce and tourism while supporting the country’s aspirations of attaining sustainable middle-income status.
Positioning Uganda as a Regional Aviation Hub
The fleet expansion comes amid growing competition among African airlines as countries invest heavily in aviation infrastructure to capture a larger share of passenger and cargo traffic.
For Uganda, the acquisition represents more than just additional aircraft. It is part of a broader strategy to establish the country as a leading aviation and logistics hub serving East Africa and beyond.
Improved connectivity is expected to attract more international visitors, facilitate business travel and encourage foreign direct investment by making Uganda more accessible to global investors and trading partners.
The move also complements ongoing investments in airport infrastructure and aviation services aimed at enhancing Uganda’s competitiveness within the region.
Long-Term Partnership with Boeing
Beyond the aircraft acquisition, the agreement signals the beginning of a deeper partnership between Uganda Airlines and Boeing.
Speaking during the ceremony, Boeing Vice President of Sales, Anbessie Yitbarek, reaffirmed the aircraft manufacturer’s commitment to supporting Uganda Airlines’ growth ambitions.
He pledged Boeing’s support through technical expertise, training programmes and capacity-building initiatives designed to ensure the airline’s long-term sustainability and operational excellence.
Such support is expected to strengthen local aviation expertise and help Uganda Airlines build the technical and human resource capabilities required to manage a growing fleet and expanding route network.
Confidence in Uganda’s Aviation Future
The airline expressed appreciation to President Museveni, the Government of Uganda, the Board of Directors, Boeing, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority, and the airline’s management and negotiation teams for their support in advancing the transaction.
The agreement underscores growing confidence in Uganda’s aviation sector and the government’s commitment to using air transport as a catalyst for economic growth.
As Uganda Airlines continues to expand its network and modernise its fleet, the Boeing partnership is expected to accelerate the carrier’s ambition of becoming a competitive player in African aviation while contributing to national development objectives.
For Uganda, the signing represents not only the acquisition of new aircraft but also a strategic investment in connectivity, trade and economic transformation, one that could reshape the country’s aviation landscape for decades to come.
