Uganda Allocates Shs20bn For Rectification Of Mbale Industrial Park Ruined By Floods

State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatization Evelyn Anite has informed the country that the government has allocated Shs20bn to improve infrastructure, especially drainage & water channels in Mbale Industrial Park.
Mbale Industrial Park was part of the infrastructural establishments that were ravaged by floods in the Bamasaba sub-region. An estimated 30 people died in the rainy floods that destroyed billions of property, plants and animals and infrastructure.
“I did a firsthand assessment of Mbale Industrial Park floods damage. President Yoweri Museveni has approved Shs20bn to quickly expand the drainage system. The government has already restored water and electricity. More measures to cushion investors & save jobs are under discussion,” minister Anite said during a tour of the park.
Rwakakamba Morrison, the chairperson of Uganda Investment Authority, said Shs400bn for resilient infrastructure shall also be provided.
Also, investment minister Anite has promised to set up a Technical Working Group comprising representatives of Uganda Investment authority, ministry of works and transport, ministry of water and environment, NEMA and Mbale City to deal with flood challenges in Mbale Industrial Park.

Anite and Rwakakamba were in Mbale to assess the aftermath of recent floods in the city. The government has been under scrutiny for giving out marked wetlands and swamps to investors who set up factories. Now, it looks like nature is fighting back.
