Artists lash out at UNMF over silence on concert cancellations

Rising Afrobeat singer Venom Temperature echoed the concerns, stressing that UNMF should represent all musicians regardless of political or personal affiliations.

Uganda’s music industry is once again under scrutiny following the abrupt cancellation of singer Daxx Kartel’s concert at Gangu Playground, with artists and promoters accusing the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) of remaining silent amid increasing police interference in concerts.

Creative industry promoter and activist Nyanzi Martin Luther has openly questioned the relevance of UNMF, arguing that the federation has failed to defend musicians whose shows continue to be blocked.

“What is the importance of UNMF? Artists’ concerts have been blocked and UNMF is silent. What is it doing for the artists then?” Nyanzi said.

Rising Afrobeat singer Venom Temperature echoed the concerns, stressing that UNMF should represent all musicians regardless of political or personal affiliations.

“UNMF is not a politically affiliated organization, so it must cater for all artists. Its silence is disappointing,” he said.

The criticism follows revelations by Daxx Kartel that his concert was stopped by police before he could take to the stage. The singer further claimed that some members of his team were arrested, describing the incident as unfair and humiliating, especially since it marked his first major concert in several years.

Venom Temperature also faulted UNMF President Eddy Kenzo for what he described as a lack of leadership during a critical moment for the industry.

“Kenzo is silent when artists are suffering. As president, he should be the first to speak up when such injustices happen,” he said.

By press time, the Uganda Police had not issued an official statement explaining the cancellation of Daxx Kartel’s concert. Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on UNMF to clarify its position and take concrete steps to protect the rights and freedoms of musicians.
