Gulu teen’s death linked to assault, not political scuffle — Police
According to the family and preliminary police findings, Otim left home on 6th December 2025 at around 5:00 p.m., informing his mother that he was heading to town. When he did not return by 11:00 p.m., the family grew concerned.
The authorities have issued a clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Otim Leon Joshua, a 16-year-old student and resident of Customs Corner Cell, Bardeg Layibi Division in Gulu City, following misinformation circulating on social media.
According to the family and preliminary police findings, Otim left home on 6th December 2025 at around 5:00 p.m., informing his mother that he was heading to town. When he did not return by 11:00 p.m., the family grew concerned.
At about 5:00 a.m., Otim’s mother was approached by two boda boda riders who brought him home in critical condition. They informed her that he had been beaten by individuals at Lailong after being accused of stealing a mobile phone at around 4:00 a.m.
His mother immediately rushed him to Lacor Hospital, where he was admitted. Despite medical efforts, Otim passed away on 9th December 2025 around midday.
Police visited Lacor Hospital, recorded statements from the mother and the boda boda riders, and confirmed that Otim was a student at Exel High School in Mukono, home for the holidays.
Investigations indicate that he was assaulted by four boys, who are currently on the run. Security efforts to apprehend them are underway.
Authorities have strongly dismissed claims circulating online alleging that Otim’s death resulted from a confrontation involving security personnel or Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi. They emphasize that these allegations are false and that Otim succumbed to injuries from the assault following the theft accusation.
The public is urged to remain calm as investigations continue. Officials reassure the community that all efforts are being made to ensure justice for Otim and support for his family.
