The Niger national football team, affectionately known as the Mena, touched down at Entebbe International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the first squad to arrive in Uganda for the much-anticipated Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) and receiving a truly glorious welcome.
Clad in their famed green and orange track suits, the West African contingent was immediately immersed in Ugandan culture. As they exited the arrivals terminal, they were greeted by vibrant traditional dances that set a celebratory tone.
The team and delegation were visibly captivated, particularly by the giant Silverback statue strategically placed at the airport exit, alongside individuals dressed as gorillas. Players eagerly reached for their phones to capture images, clearly warming up to the unique entertainment.
The team’s departure from the airport building to their bus was notably slow, with many players eager to extend their viewing of the Crane performers’ cultural dances.
From the airport, the Mena were whisked away to their accommodation at Protea Skyz in Naguru, where they will be based for the tournament. Niger finds themselves in Group C, a challenging pool alongside hosts Uganda, football giants South Africa, Algeria, and Guinea. While acknowledged as the lowest-rated side in their group, the team is aware they will have their work cut out for them against formidable opponents.
The Mena will kick off their CHAN campaign with their opening fixture against Guinea on Monday at 5 pm, a match that will undoubtedly set the tone for their tournament aspirations.
