Parliament renovates VIP rooms at Mulago Hospital ahead of Commonwealth Speakers’ Conference in January

It is expected that 42 Speakers have confirmed that they will attend the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding officers of Commonwealth.

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has revealed that in preparation, to handle any emergencies that may befall any delegate attending the Commonwealth Speakers’ Conference Parliament carried out renovation works inside the VIP rooms at Mulago National Hospital.

The Commonwealth Speakers’ Conference is slated for 3rd -6th January 2024 in Munyonyo. The Speaker didn’t reveal how much was spent on the renovation.

“Parliament has been able to do some small renovations and equip some VIP rooms in Mulago hospital, awaiting their visitors. We have invested, we have put some money in Mulago Hospital and we will make sure that Mulago Hospital is ready to receive our visitors in case one falls sick. It is also a collaboration between Parliament and the National referral hospital,” Among said told a Press Conference in Kampala on Friday.

It is expected that 42 Speakers have confirmed that they will attend the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth.

Not a waste of money

The Speaker noted that unlike some sentiments in the public that such conferences are a waste of taxpayers’ money, this won’t be the case because the Speakers’ conference will be an avenue to promote Uganda’s tourism. “The Speakers are going to come with some delegations of business people with plans to invest in Uganda,” she revealed.

“I know Ugandans will say those ones are just wasteful, we aren’t going to waste government money, but we have benefits that are going to accrue from this. The Speakers and Presiding Officers will hold bi-lateral and multi-lateral meetings which are expected to strengthen the ties between these Parliaments.

And remember these speakers are coming with their spouses and accompanying persons and you find these accompanying persons are the business community, coming to get business opportunities in the country, so they are bringing money into the country,” she explained.
