Process of acquiring driving permit now automated

With the new development at IOV, Nampiima noted that whoever will be in need of applying for these tests, it’s no longer going to be done manually by walking there, but all applications will be handled online.

Traffic Police have instituted online exams for all motorists who may wish to apply for driving licenses. Police said this is one of the measures for reducing road accidents and allowing motorists to operate safely on the roads in Uganda.

According to the directorate, learner drivers have to first register and train with a licensed driving school which then presents them to the force’s Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOVs) for examination.

This is done to fight corruption during the application for driving licenses.

Addressing journalists at police headquarters in Naguru, traffic police spokesperson Faridah Nampiima noted that the new development at the Inspectorate of Vehicles is about the automated drivers’ testing process which involves an online exam.

She added that the entire process up to the acquisition of driving permits has now been automated; there’s no chance for any wrong culprits to attain driving permits without this test.

“Effective this month, attaining a learner’s driving license at the learners’ centre was automated and booking of the learners’ testing is done online by driving schools and all learners are brought by school instructors for testing,” said Nampiima.

With the new development at IOV, Nampiima noted that whoever will be in need of applying for these tests, it’s no longer going to be done manually by walking there, but all applications will be handled online.

She explained that apart from being responsible for the inspection of all vehicles, the IOV also tests learner drivers to qualify them to get driving licenses.

According to the directorate, learners have the online exam which is auto and when the system automatically marks, without instructors testing people pass exams to attain driving licenses.

“When you pass with 75% and above in the online theory exam, you qualify to be tested for practical driving, and if you pass it, your data is entered into the system and sent directly to Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS).

Whoever fails, your name will not be forwarded to UDLS to acquire a driving permit,”

The procedure for obtaining an Uganda driver’s license is performed by the inspectorate of vehicles, upon which one is issued with a Certificate of Competence (CoC) number written on the learner’s permit and the certificate itself is sent to UDLS.
