Surgical landscape exhibition to unveil surgical advancements in Uganda

The event is scheduled for the March 26,2024 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.

In a joint effort to showcase Uganda’s expanding surgical capabilities, the Ministry of Health and the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU) held a press briefing  providing insights into the upcoming Surgical Landscape Exhibition and Scientific Conference.

The event is scheduled for the March 26,2024 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.

The press briefing, led by Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Frank Asiimwe Rubabinda, the President and the consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Mulago National Specialized Hospital, aimed to shed light on the country’s available surgical services and dispel misconceptions about seeking medical assistance abroad.

Dr. Atwine emphasized the importance of addressing the public’s lack of awareness regarding local surgical services, stating, “The law doesn’t allow doctors to advertise their services. However, due to continuous negative publicity, people aren’t utilizing our services as required.”

She lamented the growing trend of citizens seeking medical treatments abroad, despite the availability of quality services within the country.

“On March 26, we invite everyone to come and learn about the available services, including knee and hip replacements that can be done right here,” she urged.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Association of Surgeons of Uganda, aims to bridge the information gap by offering free consultations and showcasing various surgical procedures through recordings at the exhibition.

Dr. Atwine called upon the media to play a crucial role in raising awareness, emphasizing that “our country needs us more than we need it,” and urged everyone to focus on building confidence in the health sector.

Dr. Asiimwe highlighted Uganda’s progress in the surgical landscape, stating, “The landscape for surgery has become wider, and Uganda is catching up with the rest of the world by evolving in transplant, urology, and many other fields.”

He outlined the objectives of the exhibition, explaining that it aims to display available services, identify gaps in infrastructure and funding, and garner support from decision-makers. Notably, the President of the Republic of Uganda, His Excellency, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has confirmed to officiate this prestigious event.

The Surgical Landscape Exhibition promises to be an informative and interactive platform for the public and decision-makers alike. Video clips, recordings, and an opportunity for questions and answers will provide a comprehensive overview of the advancements in Uganda’s healthcare sector.

The event serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to building confidence in its healthcare system and promoting national development.
