Bobi Wine flees Uganda after two months in hiding following controversial presidential election
Opposition leader Bobi Wine has announced that he has temporarily left Uganda after spending nearly two months in hiding following the recent presidential election.
In a statement addressed to “Fellow Ugandans and friends of Uganda,” the leader of the National Unity Platform said he had been evading security forces since shortly after the election in which incumbent president Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner.
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, claimed that security personnel attempted to raid his home a day after the election results were announced, prompting him to go into hiding.
“A day later, gripped by shame and fear, the military invaded my home to harm me, but I was able to evade them and go into hiding,” he said in the statement.
According to Wine, security agencies have spent the past two months searching for him across the country, carrying out operations that he says included raids on the homes of his colleagues and political allies.
He also alleged that authorities mounted roadblocks and conducted spot checks on vehicles and motorcycles while trying to track him down.
Wine further claimed that police officers who had been assigned to his campaign were arrested or dismissed, and that his family home in the village was also raided during the search.
“They couldn’t find me because the people of Uganda sheltered me and protected me,” he said.
The opposition leader said his departure from the country would be temporary and aimed at conducting what he described as “important work.” Over the coming weeks, he plans to meet with international partners and allies before returning to Uganda.
“Over the next few weeks, I will engage with our friends and allies all over the world before returning to Uganda to continue the push for freedom and democracy,” he said.
Wine urged his supporters to remain calm and united as political tensions remain high in the country following the disputed election. “For now, let’s remain focused and united,” he added.
