Anyakun confirmed the food items dispatched will be delivered to the sub-county headquarters in Abim, Amudat, Kaboong, Karenga Kotido, Moroto and Nabilatuk, among other districts in the Karamoja sub-region.

The Ministry for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Friday flagged off food relief meant for people severely affected by hunger in the Karamoja sub-region.

The food relief dispatched was procured from the Shs20bn the Office of the Prime Minister received this quarter.

This sum is part of the Shs135bn approved by the cabinet to cater for the hunger-stricken areas amid alleged complaints of inadequate interventions by area Members of Parliament.

The Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Esther Anyakun, said they have been able to dispatch 2,562 megatons of maize flour and 1,281 megatons of beans to the population in Karamoja suffering food insecurity.

“Kaabong district is getting 294,500kgs of maize flour and 147,250kgs of beans. Karenga district is getting the same amount. Abim is getting 100,000kgs of maize flour and 50,000kgs of beans. Kotido district is among the most affected; it is going to get 405,600kgs of maize flour and then 202,800kgs of beans,” she explained the rationing.

Moroto will get 268,000kgs of maize flour and 134,300kgs of beans, Nabilatuk district will get 200,900kgs of maize flour and 100,450kgs of beans, Nakapiripirit will get 150,000kgs of maize flour and 75,000kgs of beans while Napak will get 100,000kgs of maize flour and 50,000kgs of beans.

Anyakun confirmed the food items dispatched will be delivered to the sub-county headquarters in Abim, Amudat, Kaboong, Karenga Kotido, Moroto and Nabilatuk, among other districts in the Karamoja sub-region.

The dry season in the Karamoja sub-region started to unfold in December 2021 before worsening in February 2022. This forced the Office of the Prime Minister to intervene with relief food distribution in stricken areas.

The last Acute Food Insecurity Phase Classification (IPC) revealed that approximately 518,000 people are in urgent need of food assistance in Karamoja.

According to IPC3, almost 428,000 individuals face crisis levels of food insecurity and in IPC4, almost 90,000 are at emergency levels in the period between March and July 2022.
