The Judiciary Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu has launched the first-ever court child care centre at Mayuge grade one magistrate’s court, Charmar News has learnt.

She said that the centre has been established to pay special attention to children and breastfeeding mothers at the court. Mothers, she revealed, always find it hard to breastfeed their children while handling court matters.

“It is a problem the arm of government is looking forward to addressing in the country. This will provide a good environment for mothers and children in the judiciary premises,” Langa said at the launch.

She explained that the centre is not only for mothers to breastfeed their babies but also a learning centre for children. She noted that other ministries and government departments can benchmark what they have done and provide child centres.

Langa warned the judicial duty bearers in Mayuge district over absenteeism and corruption that is making the public lose hope and interest in the judiciary yet justice is free.

The upgrade

Maureen Kasande, the Judiciary’s Undersecretary, said Mayuge grade one magistrate’s court has been elevated to chief magistrate court for proper service delivery in the district.

Tasibula Peter Nkwanga, the LC V Vice Chairperson, commended the judiciary for considering Mayuge district to have a court child care centre, the first of its kind in the country.

The new judiciary is bringing services near Ugandans and we need justices for all, Kasande promisingly stated.

Marry Kayanga, the Mayuge district Probation Officer, said the district is lucky to have such a centre that will enable children to learn, play and rest while their parents are in court. This, he said, will ensure the safety of these children.

Solomon Baleeke Travor, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, said the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has a reason to celebrate this achievement.

He, however, reported to the Judiciary Chief Registrar the rampant land wrangles in Mayuge district. His office, Baleeke said, has 20 land wrangles files. He asked judicial officers to help and deliver justice to the people without bias.
