Museveni appoints Haruna Kasolo acting minister of foreign affairs
The appointment places Kasolo at the helm of Uganda's foreign affairs docket at a time when the country continues to strengthen diplomatic relations, promote regional integration, and pursue strategic international partnerships.

President Yoweri Museveni has appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing Uganda’s diplomatic affairs in the absence of a substantive minister.
The appointment, dated June 22, 2026, was communicated through an official letter signed by the President.
“In exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 99(1) of the Constitution, I hereby appoint you as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs in the absence of a substantive Minister,” President Museveni wrote.
The appointment places Kasolo at the helm of Uganda’s foreign affairs docket at a time when the country continues to strengthen diplomatic relations, promote regional integration, and pursue strategic international partnerships.
Kasolo, who has been serving as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, welcomed the appointment and expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the confidence reposed in him.
“I am profoundly honoured by the trust and confidence reposed in me by H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni through my appointment as Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs,” Kasolo said in a statement.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to His Excellency for this opportunity to serve our nation in this capacity.”
The acting minister pledged to continue advancing Uganda’s foreign policy objectives and safeguarding the country’s interests on the international stage.
“I remain committed to upholding Uganda’s foreign policy objectives, advancing our diplomatic engagements and serving with integrity, professionalism and unwavering dedication in the pursuit of our national interests,” he said.
Kasolo’s appointment comes as Uganda continues to play an active role in regional peace and security initiatives, economic diplomacy, trade promotion, and multilateral engagements through organizations such as the East African Community, the African Union, and the United Nations.
Political observers say the appointment reflects the President’s confidence in Kasolo’s experience within the Foreign Affairs Ministry and his ability to provide continuity in Uganda’s diplomatic engagements during the transition period.
As Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kasolo will be expected to coordinate Uganda’s relations with foreign governments, international organizations, and development partners while advancing the country’s strategic interests abroad.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains a key institution in implementing Uganda’s foreign policy, promoting trade and investment opportunities, protecting the interests of Ugandans abroad, and strengthening the country’s international standing.
