Postmortem on MP Hellen Nakimuli inconclusive as further tests ordered

The additional examinations are expected to focus on both medical and procedural aspects of the surgery, with specialists seeking to determine whether any underlying conditions or complications may have contributed to her death.

A postmortem examination conducted on the body of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament, Hellen Nakimuli, has not yet established the cause of her death, prompting pathologists to order further investigations.

Nakimuli, who died on April 19, 2026 following an unsuccessful surgical procedure at Alexandros Medical Center, was examined at Mulago City Mortuary in Kampala.

According to the Leader of Opposition and spokesperson of the National Unity Platform, Joel Ssenyonyi, government pathologists indicated that initial findings were inconclusive.

“The cause of death has not been ascertained yet, but further tests are being carried out, including an assessment of the surgery that took place yesterday,” Ssenyonyi said after receiving the body.

The additional examinations are expected to focus on both medical and procedural aspects of the surgery, with specialists seeking to determine whether any underlying conditions or complications may have contributed to her death.

Pathologists have since informed family members and authorities that a comprehensive report detailing their findings will be released once all tests are complete.

The delay in establishing the cause of death has heightened public interest in the case, particularly given Nakimuli’s position as a serving legislator and Shadow Minister for Information.

Her body has since been handed over to family and colleagues ahead of a series of funeral rites, even as the medical inquiry into her death continues.
