UEFA condemns decision to suspend Balogun red card nan, warns of threat to football integrity

UEFA has strongly criticized a decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban issued to player Folarin Balogun following his red card, warning that the move undermines the integrity and credibility of football competitions.

In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, UEFA described the decision as unprecedented and said it crossed “a red line” by suspending, on a one-year probationary basis, the mandatory suspension that normally follows a red card.

The European football governing body argued that football is governed by clear and universally applied rules that ensure fair, honest and transparent competition.

According to UEFA, the automatic one-match suspension for a player sent off is a mandatory regulation rather than a discretionary sanction that can be waived by a disciplinary body.

“A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted,” UEFA said.

The organization added that making exceptions during an ongoing tournament is unfair to other players who have received red cards and served the mandatory suspension under the same regulations.

UEFA warned that the decision creates a precedent that could affect future disciplinary cases during the competition by requiring similar treatment in comparable circumstances.

“When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined,” the statement said.

The governing body also expressed concern that decisions made during a major international tournament could have broader consequences for football globally, given the influence of such competitions on the sport.

“Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws,” UEFA stated.

The organization concluded by expressing its “disbelief” at what it described as an “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

UEFA did not indicate what further action, if any, it intends to take following the ruling.
